PREFACE

THIS portfolio is intended to be in every respect a companion volume to our
previous work, «« Mouldings of the Wren and Georgian Periods," and the
examples illustrated in it have been specially selected for the purpose from
the best small domestic work of the Tudor Period. For the purposes of the
book, the Tudor Period has been taken broadly to include Elizabethan and
Jacobean work, and as it has been borne in mind that the book's usefulness
will lie mainly in the sphere of domestic design, no mouldings from the larger
examples of Tudor work have been illustrated in the portfolio.

In order to show the position, relationship, and general arrangement of
the various mouldings, a small measured drawing to a scale of f in. to i ft.
has been included with every set of mouldings, so that it is hoped that the
book will contain a great deal of useful information about details of Tudor
domestic work, in addition to its comprehensive survey of the mouldings of
the period.

We acknowledge with grateful thanks the assistance which has been given
to us by many owners of private houses, who have kindly allowed us to
measure and reproduce examples of mouldings.
